| Unwin of LiverpoolJack and Alexander are linked to the Unwins via their paternal grandmother, RITA MARGARET UNWIN (1917-2000), the daughter of George Unwin (1892-1975) and Ann Ellen Williams (1892-1962).Thanks to research by Julie Unwin of Rugby, Warwicks, it is easy for many people to tie into the Liverpool Unwin family tree. Julie recorded all the children of her ancestors, not just her direct line.NINTH GENERATIONOur oldest Unwin to date is James, who married Mary PARKINSON. They were probably born in the 1740s and were having children in the 1760s - in Liverpool.Their children included Thomas b1768, Robert and John, Betty and Catherine.EIGHTH GENERATIONWe know of two lines:Thomas married Sarah TAYLOR and they had eight children - Catherine 1787, Mary 1789, Thomas 1792, James 1794, Sarah 1795, Ann (birthdate unknown), Catherine 1830, and John William 1806.Robert married Margaret AIREY (b1776) and they had eight children - Jessie 1801-1815, John 1802, Robert (birthdate unknown), James 1808, George 1811, Thomas 1814, Richard Parkinson 1817, and Joseph 1821.SEVENTH GENERATIONWe know of one line from Thomas Unwin and Sarah Taylor:James (James the blacksmith) was baptised at Mount Pleasant Wesleyan Chapel, Liverpool, on May 25, 1794. He married Mary, the daughter of shipwright Thomas Williams. They had eight children - James 1818, Betsy 1818, Margaret 1820, Mary 1822, John 1825, Thomas 1829, Philip 1930, Joseph 1834 We know of one line from Robert Unwin and Margaret Airey:Robert Parkinson Unwin b1817 married Margaret Thomas and had a son, Lewis. More information on this line from Alan Jones.SIXTH GENERATIONWe know of two lines from James Unwin and Mary Williams:James Unwin (James the labourer) b1818 married Alice Unknown and had four children - George 1839, Betsey 1841, Margaret 1846 and Alice 1850. James is listed as a labourer in the 1851 census.John Unwin (John the porter) b1825 married Mary Unknown, b1830, and had a son, Matthew, born 1850. John is listed as a warehouse porter in the 1851 census. Information on this line ends here.FIFTH GENERATIONWe know of one line from James Unwin and Alice Unknown:George Unwin b1839 married Margaret Williams b1840. Wedding was on September 7, 1859. They lived in Great Clive Street, Toxteth. George was a sailmaker and journeyman. Three children are known: James Edward b1860, Elizabeth b1863, and George Alfred b1866, d1928James and Alice are in the 1851 census at 30 Heath Street: James, 33, labourer Alice, 29 George, 11 Betsey, 10 Alice, 9 Margaret, 5 There are also lodgers James Stanley, 67, and Catherine Brown, 32, with her children Thomas, 3, and Mary, 1FOURTH GENERATIONWe know of one line from George Unwin and Margaret WilliamsGeorge Alfred Unwin 1866-1928 married Rebecca Hannah Mulvey 1866-1954.. Five children are known: Rebecca Hannah (Becky) Unwin b 1887, Edward Francis (Frank) Unwin (1888-1965), Horace Unwin (dates unknown), George Laurence Unwin (1891-1975), and Daisy Unwin (dates unknown).
George Snr is obviously at sea at the time of the 1861 census: The family living in a court in Chic Street, Toxteth Park are: Margaret Unwin, 22, cigar maker, James 1, Thomas 12 month, Margaret's mother Rebecca Williams, head of household and a charwoman, Thomas Williams, 18, and Joseph Williams, 16, both forge labourers. (In the 1851 census, the Williamses are living in Mannington Street, Toxteth: Thomas Williams, 43, a shipwright, is married to Rebecca, 36, and their children are Robert, 19, mariner, Marget, 15, Thomas, 8, Joseph, 6, William, 3 and Anne, 3 months; they shared their hom e with servant Alice Belvery, 53, and charingwoman Mary Davies, 46.)In the 1871 census Margaret gives her age as 29 and she is down as "wife of sailmaker"; her children are James, 11, Elizabeth, 7, and George, 5 . Livign with them are Rebecca Williams aged 64, and homas Williams, 24, an ironworks labourer..In 1881, George is at home at 147 Grafton Street, aged 42, and Margaret is 41. Thier children are James, 21, a general clerk, Elizabeth, 17, George, 15, an office boy, Florence, 8, Fred, 5, and Charles, 2. THIRD GENERATIONWe know of two lines from George Alfred and Rebecca:(Frank) Unwin married and had two children - Frank and Herbert (Leslie) Unwin. Frank junior settle in Kent; (Leslie's) family settled in Rugby, Warwicks.George Laurence married Anne Ellen Williams and had three children: Eileen Roper (later Duval, 1915-1995), Rita Margaret (later Bramhill, 1917-2000) and George (Buddy) (1920-1986). Descendants live in Essex, Cheshire, Shropshire, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Lancashire and Hertfordshire.In the 1891 census, George Alfred, ship's teward is at home at 35 Millin Street, with wife Rebecca H, 23, and children margaret, 5, Edward IJ, 4 and Edward IS, 2. With them are Rebecca's mother Rebecca Mulvey (the census transcriber mistakenly gives it as Malaby), aged 55, Laura Mulvey, 19, Annie, Mulvey, 16 and Edward Mulvey, 15, a hairdresser. All three Mulvey women are living on their own means.In 1901, the Unwin family are on their own at 242 Commercial Road, and George Alfred must be at sea.Rebecca is head of household, age 35, Margaret is 15, Rebecca H, 14, Edward FS, 12, George L, 9. | | |
