Betty Unwin and the City of Benares
Twelve-year-old Betty Unwin was one of 294 people drowned when a Nazi submarine torpedoed the Ellerman passenger ship City of Benares.
The Liverpool Daily Post for Mon Sept 23, 1940, lists her among the dead:
Betty UNWIN, father E.F.S.Unwin, of 41 Medlock Street, Liverpool.
Betty was my mother's cousin, and the daughter of Frank (Edward Francis Searle) Unwin, the granddaughter of George Alfred.
Betty was one of 83 children who were being evacuated to Canada to escape the Liverpool blitz.
A picture of Betty and the City of Benares are on the picture page. A book on the tragedy is available here.
