WAS 67 YEARS IN SALVATION ARMY CORPS
Mr R. N. Robinson Dies At 93
Of the 68 years that the Salvation Army Corps has been established in Creswick, Mr Robert Nathanial Robinson who died last Friday at Creswick hospital, aged 93, had been a member for 67 years. In fact, his wife, who died last November, had been a member of the same corps for 66 years. Mr. Robinson was born atChilwell but when he was 5, his people moved to Springmount, Creswick and hehad lived in the district ever since. After his marriage, more than 70 years ago, he lived for many years at Back Creek between Creswick and Dean and in the late 1930's he moved nearer along Melbourne Road and had lived there until his death. It was in that home that he and Mrs Robinson celebrated their diamond wedding early in 1943. Five of their six children then living, of a family of 11 were home for that celebration and they had visits or messages from their 33 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Then nearly 83, Mr Robinson had beenout in the forest cutting firewood a few days before.
A very sincere man, he found religion a vital force throughout his life. He is remembered for his consistent attendance at the Salvation Army services; come hail, rain or high water, he was seen, even as an old man, marching in and out along Melbourne road every Sunday in the year.
There are those who remember him as a young man working perhaps in a thresher team with other men before whom he was not afraid to kneel down in camp at night to say a prayer; and to whom, after he had got into bed with a lantern beside him, he would read a chapter from the Bible, night after night. It wasn't 'show' with that man; he lived and acted according to his beliefs. And the bible he carried with him and read regularly, torn and loose in its bindingfrom long use, was reverently used in the conduct of the funeral service when his funeral at Creswick on Monday afternoon moved from the Salvation Army hall. The coffin was draped with the flag of the Salvation Army, the flag he as Color Sergenat had carried for so many years.
Colonel Brimblecombe, Divisional Commander, conducted the service. MajorArmstong, Capt. hender and Mrs. H. Keen paid tribute to the work of Mr Robinson and Mrs Capt. Smart sang the solo, 'The Pearly Gates'. There was a wreat from the Corps, Comrades preceeded the hearst to the graveside and there was a largeattendance of Army officers. Capt. Smart, assisting the Colonel at the graveside, paid further tribute to their late comrade's service.
Coffin bearers were Messrs S. Porter, G. Robinson, G. Porter, B. Chidley, MJones, K. Jones. Pall-bearers were Messrs Porter, A.R. Tait, D. J. Hawkey, W. S. Northcott, G. Porter, F. Wright, L. Jones, C. Porter, S. Porter, Robert Porter. Messrs A. Pasco and sons were the funeral directors.
Extract from the Creswick Advertiser - Friday Nov. 21st 1952.
Mrs Mary Ann Robinson, wife of Mr R. N. Robinson of Melbourne Road, Creswick died at Creswick hospital last Saturday at the age of 89 years. Born at Daylesford, she was married at Buninyong at the age of 19. She and her husband lived at Back Creek, Creswick, for 50 years before moving nearer to the town. She is survived by her husband, two sons and four daughters of a family of eleven. For the whole of their nearly 70 years of married life, Mr and Mrs Robinson had been associated with and worked for the Salvation Army, so when her remains were interred at Creswick on Tuesday, it was fitting that the coffin was draped with the Army flag. The 66 years Mrs Robinson had been associated with the one corps at Creswick is a unique length of service to any one corps in the annals of the Salvation Army, at least in Southern Australia.
The Divisional Commander, Major Frank Saunders, conducted service at the Salvation Army Citadel, assisted by Capt. R. Hender, who spoke of Mrs Robinson's long and respected service. At the graveside, Major Saunders was assisted by Envoy F. W. Luxton, a former corps officer at Creswick. Coffin bearers were Messrs S. Porter, G. Robinson, N. Jones and B. Chidley. The floral tributes included a wreath from the officers, soldiers and comrades of the Salvation Army Creswick Corps. Messrs A. Pasco and Sons were the funeral directors.
