| Joseph Prosser the Elder family of TipperaryDescendants of JOSEPH PROSSER (Prossor) live in the USA, notably Jo Callender who can be contacted at jocallen at aol.com1 JOSEPH PROSSOR the ELDER (1744-1822 and Jo's g-g-g grandfather ) was born in Dublin but came to Tipperary by 1770 where he lived out his life. He lived at Greenane, a huge estate outside of Tipperary, (about midway to Cashel?) which was owned by Richard Mansergh. Mansergh sold 16 acres of it to Joseph the Elder in 1790, who gave it to his son Joseph the Younger as a wedding gift in 1810. Jo Callender has a copy of the map of the whole estate with Joseph the Younger's section plainly marked and identified as his; as well as the deeds for both transfers.2 Joseph's son JOSEPH PROSSOR THE YOUNGER (1787-1831) married Susanna Heuston.3 Their son THOMAS PROSSOR lived 1812 to 1870. He lived in Brooklands, outside of Ballysheedy, Limerick. His sister Anna reinforced her Prossor blood by marrying her cousin Simon Max of the Waterford Prossors.4 JOSEPH GEORGE PROSSOR, the emigrant, son of Thomas, was born at Brooklands in 1865 and died in Pasadena, California, in 1955.5 Joseph George's son was THOMAS PROSSOR, father of Jo Callender, born in Ohio in 1892, died in Riverside, California in 1961. 6 JO CALLENDER herself was born in Illinois IN 1923 and lives in Tucson, Arizona.Jo is fascinated how the Australian Prossor families seem to have hold of the same history - called the Prossor Tradition - which they have added to as their families enlarged. This would indicate a common root. She adds that the fact that her name is Jo-anne (after having so many Josephs in the family) is not a coincidence! | | |
