| Robert MulveyFrom the Liverpool Courier, August 5 1889Death of old Toxteth ConservativeOne of the best-known men in Toxteth Park, Mr Robert Mulvey, tobacconist, died yesterday morning at his residence, [141] Park Lane [Road], after a brief illness.Mr Mulvey has been associated with Toxteth Park and its public affairs for the greater part of his active and useful live.In his early days he was a shipwright, and in his business capacity was intimate with the late Mr Alex Miller, Mr J Jones, and other shipbuilders who had their establishments at the south end of the city. For many years he carried on the business of a tobacconist in Park Road. He was for six years a member of the Toxteth Board of Guardians and was active in the discharge of his duties, kindly to the poor, and watchful of the interests of the rate-payers.He was a strong Conservative, and gave his willing aid to the cause. He took a prominent part in many of the most noted elections - municipal and Parliamentary - in the city and his zeal and enthusiasm in the cause remained unabated until his fatal illnes.Mr Mulvey, although a strong political partisan, was one of the most genial and kindly of men, and was popular with all classes of his neighbours, whatever their politicial sympathies may have been. Some time ago he became the lessee of the Sefton Theatre in Park Road, and in that capacity endeavoured to furnish wholesome and attractive amusement to those who resided in the neighbourhood. His death has removed a familiar figure from among the Toxteth Park notabilities, and the sad event will cause a widespread feeling of regret in all parts of the city, where he has lived so long and was so highly respected.NB: Robert was said to have known a host of stars of the mid Victorian era, including Lily Langtry. | | |
