Amelia and Gertrude Richardson were the children of Louisa Lloyd (Feb 13 , 1849 - Nov 15, 1921) before she married Henry Prossor.
Amelia, born 1871, was certainly a child of Louisa's first marriage to William Richardson on March 6, 1870, at Buttington, Montgomeryshire.
We cannot find Louisa and William in the 1871 census, but Amelia is there, age one, living as a nursed child with Mary Born and her two daughters in Church Street, Exeter. Her birthplace is given as Exeter.
Just in case Amelia is of interest to you, in 1881 there is an Amelia Richardson - age 13 and b Wolverhampton - living with her aunt and uncle, the Pollard family, in Stony Stratford, Bucks ... is it the same Amelia?
Amelia appears as a single young woman with her mother and Henry Prossor in 1891. There is then a marriage record for Adelaide Richardson married inWest Derby, Liverpool, in Sept 1893
Louisa had a second daughter, Gertrude Mary, who was born in Liverpool in 1878. On old family papers her name is given as Gertrude Richardson.
By 1881, Louisa is with Henry Prossor and they are recorded as living at 1 Stockwell Court, Hulme Lancashire, with children, Eva M (10) and Henry L (2). Eva is Henry's child by his second marriage to Eve Worster, who for some reason had died in a workhouse in London on Dec 28, 1877. Louisa gives her birthplace as Welshpool. We have made extensive searches for a record of this marriage, but with no luck.
In 1891 the family were at 111 Albert Edward Street, West Derby Liverpool, and Amelia is staying with them, which would firm up the possibility that Amelia married in Liverpool: Henry Prossor, head, male, 49 years old, bookkeeper CC, born in Southampton, Hampshire Louisa Prossor, wife, married, 40 years old, born in Bilston, Staffordshire Henry L. Prossor, son, 12 years old, scholar, born in Manchester, Lancashire Herbert L. Prossor, son, 10 years old, scholar, born in Manchester, Lancashire Frank I. Prossor, son, 8 years old, scholar, born in Manchester, Lancashire Mary (Marie) Prossor, daughter, 10 months old, born in Liverpool, Lancashire Amelia Richardson, stepdaughter, single, 20 years old, dressmaker, employed, born in Exeter, Devonshire
Gertrude, meanwhile, appears to have been farmed out to relatives, which would indicate she is definitely not Henry's daughter.
In both 1881 and 1891, Gertrude, is living in Manchester with Louisa's sister Agnes, who has married James Clegg. This would go some way to confirming that she is not the daughter of William Richardson, not Henry Prossor, although she is named as Gertrude Prossor in 1881 and as Gertrude Clegg in 1891.
On March 5, 1898, Gertrude married Harry Phillips, a horse-drawn tram driver b May 10, 1875. Harry's father was Samuel Phillips and his mother was Sarah Jane Artingstall. Harry was born in Openshaw, Manchester.
In 1901, they are living at 2 Howarth Street, Bradford, Manchester, and have two daughters, Eva and Emily, aged 2 and 1, and Lily Booth, a lodger. Eva was born Aug 9 1899 and Emily on July 9, 1900.
They had three more children: Louisa Gertrude bApril 11, 1904, Harry b Sept 25, 1909, and Frederick Samuel b F eb 27 , 1915 (NB: dates taken from family history, may not be correct).
Gertrude appears to have spent the rest of her life at 66 Grey Mare Lane, Manchester.
Eva married a Charles Mumford and they had at least one son who was in the Merchant Navy in the 1930s. Emily died unmarried in 1934 and is buried in Phillips Park Cemetery, Manchester. Louisa marride a John Foden, Harry married an Edith Mitchell. Frederick married a Florence Baines.
We have some marvellous old snaps of Gertude (and one of Harry and his tram) which we would love to share with descendants - if that is you, please get in touch.
